Protecting
Illinois's Vanishing
Prairie

A remnant of original tallgrass prairie โ€” still alive in Hinsdale. We're the community that cares for it: removing invasives, growing natives, and sharing what we know.

"A step down from a preserve โ€” a living place quietly holding on, and worth fighting for."

Our Mission

A Prairie That
Survived Against
the Odds

Before European settlement, tallgrass prairie blanketed nearly 22 million acres of Illinois. Today, less than 2,500 acres of original prairie survive. One of them is right here in Hinsdale โ€” and Hinsdale Prairie Friends exists to protect it.

Our work is hands-on and seasonal. We clear invasives, nurture native species, and train community members in the science and practice of prairie restoration. We also consult for homeowners and schools wanting to bring native plants to their own spaces.

What Makes This
Prairie Irreplaceable

โ—ˆ
Never Been Plowed

This prairie holds original seed stock and soil structure โ€” a biological continuity that cannot be recreated, only protected.

โ—ˆ
A Living Web

Native grasses and wildflowers exist in deep relationship with soil fungi, native insects, and migratory birds. Pull one thread and many unravel.

โ—ˆ
Under Constant Pressure

Invasive species like buckthorn and garlic mustard crowd out natives. Without ongoing stewardship, remnant prairies disappear within years.

โ—ˆ
Accessible to All

Not behind a fence or locked away โ€” this is a living piece of Illinois open to anyone willing to care for it.

On-the-Job Training

Learn Prairie
Restoration By Doing It

II
Recognize & Remove Invasives

III
Seed Collection & Propagation
